Animal Shelter

About Us

The Bloomfield Animal Shelter/John A Bukowski Shelter for Animals is a no-kill animal shelter managed by the Township of Bloomfield. The shelter has many types of dogs and cats available for adoption. Whether our animals come to us as surrenders or as strays, through daily social interactions and training, the shelter staff and volunteers get to know each dog and cat's personality, enabling us to make the best possible match for each adopter and animal. We treat every animal as an individual, regardless of breed or background.

The shelter accepts stray and surrendered pets from Bloomfield, Glen Ridge and Caldwell.

Animal Control/Community Cats

Call the Police Station at (973) 680-4141 to report any stray or injured animal.

If you have a problem with stray cats in your neighborhood, Bloomfield is partnering with People for Animals (PFA) to implement a Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Release (TNVR) program for feral/community cats. Cats will be trapped, brought to PFA for neutering and vaccinations, and returned to the original location. (Kittens and any friendly adult cats will be adopted out). Valerie Wilson of PFA is the contact person. Please call her at (973) 282-0890, extension 222 to report any cat colony locations.

Meet our Pet of the Month, Holly!

Holly has now been waiting over 1 year for a home and is officially our longest Shelter resident (besides our feral cat colony). She was found December 2016 with obvious signs of over-breeding. Those days are long behind her and she just wants someone of her own to love. Is 2018 her year? If you are an experienced owner, with preferably no other pets, meet her during daily adoption hours Mon-Fri 2pm-5pm, Wed 2pm-6pm, Sat-Sun 1pm-5pm.
